Its binomial name honors the explorer Heiko Bleher.〔''Freshwater and Marine Aquarium'', Volume 16, Issues 1-4, p. 56 (1993).〕 Endemic to the Brahmaputra River basin, this fish has a type location at Dibrugarh, a city in the northeastern part of Assam.〔Courtenay, Walter and Williams, James.
